Hint for Naming CoCl3 Metal (Co) + Non-metal (Cl) = Binary Ionic
But ... Co is a transition metal, so ...
- Name the metal as it appears on the Periodic Table.
- Name the non-metal (Chlorine) by replacing the ine with ide.
- Look at the chemical formula to find the charge for Co. Since Cl has an ionic charge of -1, and we have three Cl atoms, Co will have to have a charge of +3 (so the net charge for the compound is zero). To show that we write (III) after the name for Co.
