Naming Ternary Ionic Compounds

When we have a metal and a non-metal we have an ionic compound.

Metal + Non-Metal = Ionic Compound

If we have a metal and a polyatomic ion it is called Ternary Ionic.

For example,
write the formula for:
  • NaNO3
  • CaCO3
  • Al2(OH)3

Keys for Naming Ternary Ionic Compounds

  • Name the metal (the cation) as it appears on the Periodic Table.
    • Na+ = Sodium    Mg2+ = Magnesium    Al3+ = Aluminum
  • For the polyatomic ion on the Common Ion Table and write the name.
  • Note: It is possible to have two polyatomic ions such as NH4NO3. In this case find and write both names as found on the Common Ion Table.
