Hint for Naming CuO For CuO we have a transition metal and a non-metal. This is a binary ionic compound.
- Name the metal as it appears on the Periodic Table.
- Name the non-metal (Oxygen) by replacing the ygen with ide.
- Cu is a transition metal so we can't find the charge on the Periodic Table. But ... O has an ionic charge of -2. Since there is only one Cu atom it must have a charge of +2. We show that by putting a (II) after the name for Cu.
