Hint for Writing the Formula for Iron (III) sulfate

For Iron (III) sulfate we have a transition metal and a polyatomic ion.

This one is a bit tougher than the others.
  • Write the element symbol for Iron.
  • Use the Common Ion Table to find the formula and charge for the sulfate ion.
  • The (III) tells us that Iron has a charge of +3. The sulfate ion is -2.
To make this we'll need two Iron atoms to give us a total of +6 on the iron. Then we can have three sulfate ions which gives us a -6 charge.
  • When you have more than one polyatomic ion use parentheses!
Note you can use the criss-cross method to check your work.
